• Harrah's Tunica (formerly Grand Casino Tunica) to close for Good on June 2, 2014

Caesars Entertainment Corp. plans to close Harrah’s Tunica casino on June 2, citing “declines in business levels in the area stemming from increased competition.” The casino resort employs about 1,300 people.

John Payne, president of Caesars Entertainment’s Central Division, said the decision was made “after exploring every other viable alternative.” The company has attempted to sell the casino without success, but plans to continue to try to sell it up to the closing date

Has something happened exclusively in the Tunica area that is considered a cause for the big downturn in gaming biz? Has this come on just recently?
Most areas that I'm familiar with (midwest and Vegas) aren't really flourishing but are seemingly surviving okay.

I have not been to Tunica in a couple of years, but

back then their main store there was in disrepair !

I suspect that it was never spruced up.

There were BJ tables with cigarette burn holes and

craps tables with broken wooden rails, etc.

Not to mention a 2nd rate buffet under the name

of "Paula Deen" whose recent bad publicity has almost

      certainly lost Harrahs some customers.

I have a buddy that lives in Tennessee which is not far away. He says the job market is tough down there. Judging by the area near Washington it is hard to see the troubles elsewhere as so much of the areas jobs are sucking at the government teat either as a government employee or a private consultant. There have been fears in the area that the government will become more fiscally responsible and purge some employees but after years of those rumblings not much has changed. My buddy also has a house in South Carolina He makes that area sound even worse. If the average Joe is not working he doesn't have the money to go to the casino.

They are simply the victim of saturation. A few years ago, there was LV in the west, AC in the east, and Tunica was the big casino destination for the center of the country. Now, there is St. Louis and Kansas City to the north, Biloxi to the south, and a multitude of casinos sprinkled all the around the south and Midwest. There is no longer a need to travel to Tunica.

      Tthree,

Let us not forget that Tunica County is singularly noteworthy for being the most impoverished spot in all of the U.S.A. . . . with all of the socio-economic problems one would expect.

Note: Tunica Resorts is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northern Tunica County, Mississippi, north of the county seat
of Tunica. The community was originally named Robinsonville, but the name was changed in 2003.
The population of that hamlet is just 1,910.

I continued to get free hotel stays at the the Terrace and Veranda (Harrahs hotels across from the casino) for almost a year after playing - the hotels were NEVER busy and started to drop in quality in recent years - I assume they are closing the hotels along with the casino?

Reminds me of the time they were just starting to put casinos in Tunica. I happened to be in NYC and front page of the newspaper was big write up about "Sugar Ditch" and the poor there. There were about 13 or so shotgun houses along sugar ditch and you could have put them all in the bathroom of the Empire State Building.

I was out the next day and looked across at Harlem and it looked as if someone had bombed the place the night before. In all directions you could see, nothing but crumbling buildings, graffiti and poverty, yet the newspaper thought it was good front page coverage to harp on the 13 or so houses on sugar ditch.

Newspapers don't print stories to tell the truth, they print to sell papers.

The Times ran innumerable stories about Harlem too. And, it has changed dramatically. Tunica has also improved. Not nearly enough. Newspapers must continue to publish such articles.
