• Can casinos track you by your phone?

This article on today’s New York Times front page is about a department store. But, it could apply to a casino. Technology exists to track, and to some extent, identify individuals by the Wi-Fi signals emitted from their phones.

I assume this is only if you're connecting to the casino's Wi-Fi, right? Plus, many casinos don't even have service on the main gaming floor. Then again, the casino could (I think?) intercept your smartphone's signal, even if it's not connected to Wi-Fi. Something that's somewhat on the same topic, although not entirely relevant, I heard that the iMessage protocol (for iPhone, iPads) is one of, or the, strongest in terms of encryption (but they can just zoom in on your phone to view a message...unless you're in the bathroom or in your own room!).

Not necessarily connected. Just looking for Wi-Fi signals.

I heard a story about this on the radio a couple days ago and thought the exact same thing. Retailers will be using it to track shopping trends and direct very specific advertising to the consumer. If casinos decide to create a network database coupled with winnings or playing trends across the various venues, I would think it would be problematic for an advantage player...unless, of course, you just turn off your phone

I always keep WiFi off on my phone, unless I'm home. I don't do a lot of surfing with my phone, so have plenty of data leeway to use the 4G network. It's prolongs battery life, too, having one less radio on in the phone.
