• Two Downtown Vegas hotels closing?

The Las Vegas Club and Gold Spike have stopped taking reservations. Not exactly the best hotels in the world. The hotels are quiet about plans.

I thought the Vegas Club shut its hotel after the Plaza reopened. When i called there in Feb, I was redirected to the Plaza.
Gold spike just put some pretty serious money into the place over the last 18 months.

Gold spike is actually now closed, not just not taking reservations. They closed sunday, april 14. I happened by there today and they were definitely closed with signs on the window.

The 'downtown project', a group headed by Zappo's founder Tony Hsieh, is has bough up as many as 90 properties in the downtown area. Mostly small, closed businesses, but recently they have purchased the closed Western and now the gold spike, neither of which they plan to run as casinos.

I am not exactly sure what Mr Hsieh's vision for downtown is and that is a little concerning. His company zappo's is moving into the former city hall later this year, with some 13,000 employee. he lives in the downtown area and it is said is looking to build a inter city type community where people live and work in close proximity, a vibrant connected urban core based on thriving art, music and creative culture, modeled after Grenich Village and Austin, Texas. Personally, I am not sure how that works in a downtown las vegas community which is all about the casino and toursim industry and steep in history. ???
