Modern Blackjack nth Edition

Having put out a 684 page book, I thought I had run out of Blackjack-related subjects. Particularly since I hate typing. But, the field seems inexhaustible. A forum doesn’t work too well as a repository. So, I thought I’d give blogging a shot.

This is a continuation of my book, Modern Blackjack, with some random musings and studies, generally on the subject of Blackjack. Feel free to add comments.

  1. What Are the Ethics of Advantage Play?

Is advantage play ethical? There are actions that some players have taken that are clearly unethical – sneaking extra chips onto a bet when doubling, bending cards, hidden cameras, and other such cheats. This is actually rare these days. What I am talking about is normal advantage play, as follows:

Wonging: If you only enter a shoe only when the card count is in your favor, and/or exit when it is not, then you leave unaware players with worse odds then they would normally expect. They

  2. Wonging — How Many Shoes Do We Exit?

Continuing the Wonging series started with Wonging — How Many Shoes Do We Play, I’ve added a chart on Wonging out. The question is, how many shoes do we exit? In this test, I assume that the player will exit at a fixed true count. Six decks, HiLo, 85% penetration. We will look at tables with one though five other players. And, we will look at Wongers that exit at a true count of -1, -2 and -3. Actually, the player will exit at one count lower if it is the first deck in the shoe.

  3. Calculation of Area Under the Standard Normal Curve

On occasion I will post code to the blog as an extension of the Sim Secrets chapter of my book. These posts will generally only be of interest to programmers.

Page 91 in Theory of Blackjack and page 147 in Blackjack Attack have tables used to determine areas under sections of the standard normal curve. These tables can be used to determine the probability of some events. For example, CVCX uses this to determine the probability of your actual results in a casino.

  4. Blackjack Rules and Variations

I have about 140 Blackjack rules in my book. But, the variations keep coming. Ithought I would maintain a list of additional variations here. I’ll update this list as people inform me of new rules:

    • ENHC game, you can wait to buy insurance until the moment the dealer announces “Insurance closes!” and hits the upcard. This is very convenient because you have the chance of seeing more cards to make the decision. And you can buy insurance before you hit your hand and if you bust

  5. Wonging — How Many Shoes Do We Play?

There seems to exist a paucity of data on Wonging. I thought I’d add a series of tables. Let us start with the number of shoes played. The question is, if we backcount an entire shoe, what is the likelihood that we will ever enter the shoe? In this test, I assume that the player will enter at a fixed true count. Six decks, HiLo, 85% penetration. We will look at tables with one though five players. And, we will look at backcounters that enter at a true count of +1, +2 and +3. The red player (the

About Blackjack: The Forum

BJTF is an advantage player site based on the principles of comity. That is, civil and considerate behavior for the mutual benefit of all involved. The goal of advantage play is the legal extraction of funds from gaming establishments by gaining a mathematic advantage and developing the skills required to use that advantage. To maximize our success, it is important to understand that we are all on the same side. Personal conflicts simply get in the way of our goals.
