Modern Blackjack nth Edition

Having put out a 684 page book, I thought I had run out of Blackjack-related subjects. Particularly since I hate typing. But, the field seems inexhaustible. A forum doesn’t work too well as a repository. So, I thought I’d give blogging a shot.

This is a continuation of my book, Modern Blackjack, with some random musings and studies, generally on the subject of Blackjack. Feel free to add comments.

  1. Double after Ace Split — A Step Further

This is a follow-on to the previous post which should be read first.

I thought I would determine exactly when it is acceptable to double for less for the purple hands. This can be accomplished with Cacarulo’s tables in Appendix A of Don Schlesinger’s Blackjack Attack. Having made the calculations, I removed two purple plays, A7 vs. ten and ace. These require very high ratios of current bet to minimum bet allowed. In the chart below, you will now see numbers in the remaining purple cells.

  2. Double after Ace Split Blackjack Rule

This new Blackjack rule is appearing in more casinos. It is an interesting rule in that you are allowed to double after you split aces, but you are not allowed to hit. Double and stand are the only two options. If the correct move is to double, that’s great. Go ahead and put more money up. But, if the correct move would not normally be to double, you may want to double for less if you get a poor hand. That is, double with the smallest bet allowed to pay a bit for another card in the hope of a

  3. Card Counters Don’t Stare

There is a post on SOBSA on a private Blackjack site. SOBSA is the Sense Of Being Stared At. The question in the article is can you improve your play by using SOBSA. That is, sensing that someone is looking at you. The post gives no direct answer and provides the needed cynicism. The article is very interesting – but in my mind misses the point. In my mind, the concept should be focused on you staring at casino folk, not casino folk staring at you. The concept that you can sense surveillance watching

  4. Why Are Casinos Run So Badly?

Thorp’s best-selling book bringing to the masses the secrets of card counting produced a massive interest in Blackjack. As a result, casino profits boomed. This is a logical result. The knowledge that casinos can be beat brings great interest, even though most people do not have the patience or discipline to put that knowledge to use. It isn’t that the techniques are that hard. It’s that most people are too lazy, too superstitious or in too much of a hurry to put the techniques into effective

  5. Musings – Do Card Counters Contribute to Society?

The question comes up on occasion, what do card counters contribute to society? Oddly, you don’t often hear the question “What do advertising execs, looking for new ways to push sugar on children, contribute to society?” Or, plastic surgeons that spend their time pumping fat into women’s lips instead of helping burn victims, or CEOs that buy and sell companies, laying off workers, to increase their own power and income instead of trying to create a better product. Or politicians of all stripes
