I think the word "caught" should not be used in this context. "Caught" implies wrongdoing. Absent collusion with a dishonest dealer, there is nothing wrong with hole carding. It is a perfectly legal and appropriate method of skillful play. Yes, casino personnel often react negatively, no different than they do to other forms of skillful play. They do not want winning players. Some inept casino folks take holecarding personally, possibly because it exposes the casino's poor training and/or supervision.

To be fair, whereas few have a problem with an unsought glimpse of the dealer's hole card, some believe professional hole carding is a legal right and a moral wrong.

Popular methods include creating obstacles on the table such as an ashtray or drink so that the dealer has to maneuver the cards around or over the obstacle, resting your chin on the rail to get a better angle of the card if the dealer is slightly showing it, pretending to drop something, pretending to tie your shoe, etc.

I had a 3CP dealer you could HC from the next state. No effort required.
