An ace with a smudge as the next card coming from the shoe would be another. Archie Karas is involved in a case right now in which he is accused of marking cards in a CA blackjack game. The only thing the prosecution lacks currently is evidence. He had received some gambling stuff from a friend who passed away, including a very old chip from a Vegas casino that had been drilled out for inserting dye for the purpose of marking cards. The Feds theorize that this chip or one like it was used by Archie to mark cards in the game he was playing, however, they don't have any marked cards, just a theory. It will be interesting to see where this goes. Archie already spent several weeks in jail before he was released under bond. I see a big dollar counter suit if found innocent.

I remember reading that article about Karas as he was arrested. If I can recall from memory it was at the Barona where they have the BJ HOF, what a setting for such an incident to take place. If he was doing it he would of had to have been playing a pitch game in order to gain maximum advantage because in a shoe dealt game the players are not allowed to touch the cards. I think if a player was marking cards by leaving a smudge or type of dye on the cards it would be a dead give-away in the casino's eyes that someone at the table is cheating. I wonder what the verdict will be in Archie's case.
Not to long ago I inadvertently performed my first hole-card play and I didn't even see the dealers hole card. The card was marked and I didn't even handle the cards. The cards were just marked for me because of an eagle eye. A casino patron inadvertently set up my first hole card play in a pitch game. Now I know the technique and even as the cards went thru the automatic shuffler they still held their mark, even after playing thru an unmarked deck so to say. That is what amazed me. I had an epiphany at the table and the dealer was completely clueless. Talking about Archie just brought back the memory to the forefront of the cerebral cortex

Archie says he was not cheating, but he has been accused before. He feels the Feds are out to get him, put him away for ten years.
The mark can be put on a face down card using a habit of tapping the table with a chip to "good" advantage. I personally would never do it (I'm prison adverse), but that's how it's done.
What you said about taking advantage of someone else marking the cards sent a chill up my spine. All you have to do is make an obvious play based on that fact and next thing you know they're accusing you of cheating.

Hopefully Archie can win his case. By not being there or observing the deck of cards it's hard for a third party to make an assessment about potential cheating unless it is blatant.
The funny thing about the inexperienced player who inadvertently marked the cards, they were oblivious to their own marking and had no idea about it. It just happened and the dealer did not pick up on it like I did. I seen something, I observed, and seen how clueless the dealer was. I finally got my cherry popped on my first hole card play in blackjack and man has it given me a slew of ideas on how I can hole card their games to an extent. I will be performing this in the future and I have the perfect idea on how to make it work if I want to.
